I know this is a tough time for everyone and one of the things keeping us sane this period is Netflix. However, the major problem of using the world’s biggest streaming platform is finding what to watch but hey, I’m here to help you.
Please Note – Some of these movies may not be available in your country, particularly if you in Nigeria. But, a simple google search can help you figure out a way to still stream movies on Netflix that are not available in your region. It’s easy, as long as you’re tech savvy or know someone who is 😉
SCI FI / THRILLER
- The Occupants – A successful executive becomes unemployed and is forced to sell his home which he and his family can no longer afford. When he discovers he still has the keys, he becomes obsessed with the family that now lives there and will do anything to recover the life he has lost. As you can see from the plot, this movie is very disturbing.
- Inception – In this Sci fi, Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) steals valuable information by entering into the head of his targets but things take a scientific turn when he is given an inverse task of putting an idea into the mind of a CEO. This movie is great on all grounds. Highly recommended.
- Bad Day For The Cut – In this revenge thriller, a farmer embarks on a mission for vengeance when his mother is murdered. As the plot thickens, he discovers that there is a dark side to his mother and to himself.
- Earth and Blood – Two criminals escape with kilos of cocaine from the evidence room of a police station and bury it in a sawmill. Soon, the innocent owner of the sawmill and his daughter becomes tangled in the deadly feud.
- The Decline – This thriller follows a group of survivalists who attend a training camp deep in winter wilderness. A fatal accident leads to division in the group and they all must do everything they can to survive. This movie shows the violent lengths humans will go to for survival and it’s definitely going to keep you on your toes!
- The platform – I don’t know what it is about this movie but it is just different. A vertical prison with one cell per level, two people per cell and only one food platform. Prisoners in the upper cell eat while those below starve. It’s open-ended and leaves room for personal interpretation. I.e whatever message you get from this movie is absolutely correct. The film to me, is a mirror of our society where we have all the resources we need but overconsumption and greed inevitably leads to inequality. Ok, I’m preaching but this is a must watch.
- Berlin Syndrome – Clare, a young travel photographer meets an attractive German teacher while exploring Berlin, they get flirty and has a one night stand with him only to wake up the next morning and see that he has taken her hostage with no intent of letting her go. The movie is dark, intense and depending on your definition of horror, this could be a horror movie.
- The Matrix Trilogy – Honestly don’t know how to explain this one but it’s a classic science fiction action film which, if you haven’t seen, you should be ashamed of yourself but here is your chance of redemption. Go and see them; The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.
COMEDY
- The Lobster – If like me, you fancy dark comedy. I mean extremely, sadistically dark comedy then you have to see this. In a dystopian society, people are turned to animals if they don’t find a romantic partner (don’t worry, they get to pick the animal). A man whose wife leaves him for someone else now has 45 days to find a partner else he’ll be turned into an animal.
- We are the Millers – When David, a street level drug dealer gets roped by his boss to smuggle drugs from Mexico to the US, he forms a fake family with a Stripper, an awkward teenage neighbor and a petty thief to help him avoid suspicion from the DEA.
- Set it up – In this romantic comedy, two underpaid office assistants decides to set up their bosses in order to get some free time away from their hectic jobs. As their plot thickens, they start to spend so much time together and as expected, they starts to fall for each other. Starring Taye Diggs, Glen Powell, Zoey Dutch, Pete Davidson… You know what I mean? Celebs full this movie.
- Sleeping With Other People – This is one of those raunchy and dirty comedy that would easily pass for a romantic movie but I prefer it in this category. Two high school acquaintances who lost their virginity to each other in high school reconnect years later in New York, they become platonic best friends while they both have trouble committing to their respective relationships.
- Murder Mystery – In this lightweight comedy, a New York Cop (Adam Sandler) finally takes his wife (Jennifer Aniston) on a long overdue European vacation. Thanks to a chance meeting on the flight, the couple gets invited to a super yacht of an elderly billionaire but things take a dramatic turn when the billionaire is murdered and they become the prime suspects. They must do everything to prove their innocence.
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail – King Arthur and his knights embark on a low budget search for the holy grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles. Out of all the British comedy troupe’s (Monty Python) chronicles, King Arthur’s quest for the holy grail is the best. Though, made in 1975, 4 decades later it still remains a Landmark achievement. the jokes, the gags, and everything is still every bit as hilarious. I don’t think you need a special kind of intelligence to get the jokes, all you need is subtitles. It’s an incredibly funny movie. 10/10 highly recommended.
- While We’re Young – This is one of those silly comedies that’ll get you laughing at every single action. A middle aged couple living in New York City have troubles coming to terms with the fact that they’re no longer young. They’ll do anything to prove that they’re still hip and cool.
- Just Friends – in high school, Chris, was an overweight nerd who was in love with his best friend Jamie but she only thought of him as a “brother” and friendzoned him. 10 years later, Chris is now a hot L.A record producer. He finds himself back in his hometown in love with Jamie over again.
- Stepbrothers – This is a comedic masterpiece written by Adam McKay – one of the best comedy filmmakers in the game. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play two grown men still living with their single parents but are forced to move out and become roommates when their parents get married. Just imagine the scenes when these two men come together and start acting like teens all over.
ACTION
I think we can agree that the bar for 21st-century action movies has been dropping lower and lower for quite some time. This list is not as nice as it could’ve been if we weren’t limited to Netflix. I tried my best to find more but these are the only impressive ones I found.
- Extraction – When you find an action movie like extraction that is not so watered down, you have no choice than to appreciate it. This movie checks out everything an action movie should entail – emotions, fast action, spectacular stunt work, gore… Honestly the production is excellent! 8/10
- Triple Frontier – 5 former special forces veterans come across a once-in-a-lifetime chance when one of them discovers the hiding place of a drug lord in the jungles of South America with millions of ill-gotten cash. They reunite to plan a heist to steal the money and kill the man.
- Spencer Confidential – In this action-comedy, an ex-cop and an ex-con team up with a budding fighter to uncover a murder conspiracy. Ok let me tell you the truth, it’s an interesting watch, nothing extra but it’s interesting and funny 6/10
- Baahubali – Probably the only movie on this list I haven’t seen but they say it’s worth the subtitles.
- Headshot – In this Indonesian martial arts, a young man suffering from amnesia’s past comes back to torment him and he must battle a criminal syndicate to protect himself and the doctor who saved his life.
- The Night Comes For Us – After sparing a girl’s life during a massacre, an assassin is targeted by dangerous gangsters.
- The Barefooted Kid – If you love kung fu movies, this is for you. A young man finds himself in the middle of a turf war between two opposing businesses thanks to his mastery of the martial arts.
- Salt – CIA Agent, Evenly Salt (Angelina Jolie) must do everything to prove her innocence when she’s accused of planning the assassination of the Russian president. I know you have most likely seen it before but it’s definitely worth a re-watch.
DOCUMENTARY
- Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons – Have you ever wondered what prison is like? Yes? This documentary explores life inside prisons where the worst of the worst criminals are kept. Everything from the violence to food to one on one conversations with inmates to attempted breakouts. Everything! There’s even an episode on the Columbia Narco prison. This is easily one of my favorite documentaries on Netflix. 9/10 for me.
- Rocco – Explore the life of Rocco Straffedi (it’s Siffredi, but, you get the point) One of the biggest names in the pornography industry. You get to see porn as a business with professionals rather than a job for horny people. Recount all the events that led to Rocco’s retirement including an exclusive behind the scenes look at his last movie. 7/10 (I told you there was something for everyone)
- I Am A Killer – The only thing better than hearing murder stories is hearing from the murderer themselves. This documentary shows interviews of death row inmates as they give firsthand accounts of the crimes that led to their conviction. 8/10
- The Social Network – This documentary focuses on Mark Zuckerberg and his big break into the Internet business. Fun fact: They were never caught, no one knows if they survived or if they’re still alive or dead. “Their disappearance is one of the country’s most notorious unsolved mysteries”
- The Seven Five – The crime documentary is one of the largest police corruption scandals in New York history. It revisits the criminal exploits of Micheal Dowd, a former New York police officer, and his dirty cop friends from stealing to running a full-blown crime ring for the biggest drug lords all while stationed in the infamous Brooklyn prescient A lot of people say it’s “the cop version of ‘GoodFellas’, ”. The best thing about this documentary is that you get first hand account from the man himself, Micheal Dowd and some of his associates. 9/10
- Hot Girls Wanted – This documentary follows the lives of amateur pornographic actresses. It will shock and outrage you. It’s a disturbing look into the lives of 18/19 year olds who come to Miami to break into the porn industry. It questions just how invested their legal guardians are in their lives, documents all their experiences and sheds light on the industry.
- Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates – You know, just incase you were wondering what goes on in the man’s head. Also, take a look at the daring goals he is still pursuing even after achieving so much. 7/10
- Killer Inside: Mind of Aaron Hernandez – A three-part docuseries examining the actions that led to former NFL superstar, Aaron Hernandez’s conviction of the murder of Odin Lloyd. It also explores the other murder cases in which he was a suspect, the factors in his life that shaped his behavior and his shocking death. Let me break this down for you, Hernandez was one of the greatest players in the NFL, in 2012 he made the NFL Top 100 list. He was an OG criminal and he has made certain appearances in my dream. Of course, I call blood of Jesus to my rescue. 😂

Here is some more that you can watch- Abducted in Plain sight, The Staircase, The Confession Killer, Amanda Knox, Captive, Wild Wild Country.
ROMANCE
- To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – I assume everyone has seen this movie so I won’t bother writing a plot but if you haven’t, you should definitely see it especially if you’re looking for a sweet, fun, romantic comedy to brighten your day. The film will have you smiling sheepishly from start to finish.

- After – One of those transitioning from high school to college romance films of a privileged young woman. - Her – This is the wistful science-fiction romance we didn’t know we needed. - Ali’s Wedding – This true life story portrays Islamic life in Australia. Ali the son of a Muslim cleric is caught up in a web of lies but he must now make a decision to either go through with his arranged marriage or follow his heart and be with the woman he truly loves. My favorite thing about this movie is that the script is pensive and funny. It could easily pass for a comedy, romance and drama.
- Rag Tag – Tbh, the only reason why this movie is on this list is because it’s a British- Nigerian romantic drama. Rag and Tagbo are childhood friends who lost touch but later reunited and took their relationship to the next level. A match made in gay heaven.
- Howards End– Let’s take it back to the 20th century, shall we? Before you tell me, “I don’t like watching old movies” You should know that this movie won the 45th anniversary award of the Cannes International film festival, 3 Oscar Awards, 2 BAFTA awards, 1 Golden Globe… hello, are you seeing the greatness here? This is a tale of the British class divisions and social conventions of the 20th century. The movie is really complicated, the plot cannot be summarized but trust me when I say it is great.
